about

The story of Settling Down is straightforward and semi fictional - Jake loses his job at a market and I say he has a safety net, whereas the other stall traders who are unemployed might be homeless.

Original idea was 'settling up' about dating and the round system, 'settling down' is the idea that when you've reached 27 or 28 years old you realise, even though you haven't settled down with a family, your ambitions lower, particularly in the arts during a recession, and the distant depressed cool sexually active pop culture figures you idealised as an 18 year old music geek virgin you are now and you've never been more depressed... i rant as ever

My friend Alan scored the highest mark in the whole university in his degree, turned down Oxbridge before that, was always super cool and handsome and nice and popular then spent his whole 20s working at Covent Garden clock market, as friends were at first envious of his freedom before it felt very Groundhog Day.

In this poem I pretend he worked at Camden Market, which was given away to a billionaire who commercialised it and kicked out all the street vendors who'd been there for decades which ruined the whole market, food became overpriced and terrible and there was no community to the place anymore.

The reference to Jake and Liberty is when I lived with comedy friends in Walthamstow and we all fell out. Liberty and Jake had an amicable break up and as they shared a tenancy kept living together, one on the sofa bed. I had a much less amicable break up weeks after.

Walthamstow with the stupid Olympics stadium and the stupid Tottenham stadium had become this stupid construction site where there were stabbings all the time, my then girlfriend was working at a school for kids in south London in gangs that due to underfunding became a borstal, it was a tough time.

I ramble, as ever
